The memories of TS Colne Light (formerly LV16), now moored at King Edward Quay., Jamie Gilbert

I can feel the sea calling me. Four times a day I rise from the mud, the ebb of the tide beckoning me downstream. I was born to be free: to ride the waves of the ocean and feel the bracing, cleansing wind on my deck. My bows are pointed towards freedom, the bend of the river tantalising me with its promise of adventure.
Once I was out there, in the wild blue yonder, shining my light to the world. I dream one day of slipping my moorings, of ploughing out to sea once more. I try to inspire the cadets who own me now. I whisper in their young ears the song of freedom. If only they feel the same desire, we could ride downstream together…
I’ve been afloat since 1954 and in that time, I’ve been all around these islands. Jarrow. Varne. Haisborough. Goodwin. The names will never leave me. I’ve shone my light to many a fellow ship, through many a storm and during many an ink-black night. I can remember some nights that I thought would never end, but I took comfort from those friendly winks of red and green out there in the blackness. They told me I wasn’t alone.
Although, if I’m truly honest with myself, I’m too old for that life these days. There’s a new generation out there now, guarding the sea lanes. It’s their time to shine. No, I’ll stay here and protect King Edward Quay. The Colne’s my home now.
