Home is Where the Sky is , Sariah Lake

It’s grey now
Where once was blue and green
Cold air kisses my skin,
Skin which knew sun mere days before
Ebbing and flowing with rivers,
Praying it returns me to the ocean

I walk with a boy I do not know but could surely love
Step by step we learn each other
The path ahead uncertain,
But approaching steadily all the same
I do not know what tomorrow looks like

Yet the sky is constant everywhere
Pink and blue and golden at the right times
I cannot go so far that I escape it

4,000 miles away, my mother sleeps
But we are under the same light
The same stars we wish goodnight
The same sun we’ll see tomorrow

Sariah Lake, 23rd February 2024 / Location 6

When I moved here, I was comforted by the river and nature by Quays, reminding me of my home island. The poem specifically reminisces on me walking the trail with a boy I'd met in university who I ended up falling in love with.
